In a metropolis, countess things are ceaselessly consumed. In New York’s Chinatown, the unceasing rhythm of daily life unfolds without pause, where rows of storefronts display nearly identical goods. One day, I struck up a conversation with a woman working at a souvenir shop I often visited. She seemed to recognize me. Though hesitant at first to talk about anything beyond business, she gradually opened up—sharing that while her immediate family was in New York, her relatives remained in China, and how difficult it was for her to return. As she spoke, her expression softened, departing from the resilient demeanor she usually wore to navigate life in the city. New York is home to countless immigrants from all over the world. Their lives are woven into the very fabric of the city, layering into its ongoing history. Though their daily existences seem to pass by as if consumed, they simultaneously endow the city with its vibrant colors.
大都市では、絶え間なく多くの物事が消費され続けています。ニューヨークのチャイナタウンでも、止まることのない日常が毎日繰り返されていました。通りにはたくさんの店が立ち並び、似たような品々が売られています。 ある日、私が度々立ち寄っていたお土産物店で働く女性に話しかけてみました。彼女も私の顔を覚えていたようです。はじめはビジネス以外の話をしてくれませんでしたが、少しずつ自分のことを語ってくれるようになりました。家族はニューヨークにいるけれど親戚は中国にいること、そして帰国することがとても難しいこと。その話をしているときの彼女の表情は、過酷な都市で気丈に生きるいつもの顔つきとは異なり、どこか柔らかく見えました。 ニューヨークには多様な国からの移民が暮らしており、彼らの営みはこの街の至る所に散りばめられ、歴史を積み上げています。彼らの日常は消費されるように通り過ぎていきますが、同時にこの街に確かな彩りを与えていました。
