The exploration of names carved into sidewalks began with the question of what motivates individuals to inscribe their names. The names and their locations hold significant meaning for those who carved them. By tracing the outlines of names that have faded over time, I aim to uncover the identities of these individuals. This video piece embodies my concept of giving each name a new location and identity. After cutting out the names, each letter gained a distinct outline. However, due to the fading of some letters, they can be misinterpreted and transformed into different words. Carving one’s name into a sidewalk is a powerful act, but when each letter is individually separated, it loses its original identity and meaning. Each name has acquired a new identity through its relocation to a unique exhibition venue, like Governors Island, where all the names have taken on a different context.
歩道に自分の名前を刻む行為の背後にある本来の願望とは何だろうという疑問から、歩道に刻まれる名前の観察が始まりました。その名前と場所は個人にとって非常に重要です。私は、時間とともに見えなくなった名前の輪郭を切り取る行為を通じて、彼らのアイデンティティを理解しようとしています。 自分の名前を刻む行為は、ニューヨークという土地に暮らす人々の特性、強い自己認識、そしてその行為を受け入れる街の特性を表しているように感じました。私は彼らの行為への静かな応答として、この都市の風景を解体し、各名前に関連する場所性と自己認識を解放し、それを元のものとは異なる新しい形として、展示会場であるガバナーズアイランドの古い住宅に再構築しました。
