The exploration of names carved into sidewalks began with the question of what motivates individuals to carve their names. These names and their locations hold significant meaning for those who inscribed them. By tracing the outlines of names that have faded over time, I aim to uncover the identities of these individuals.
I think that carving one’s name reflects the characteristics of the people living in New York, showcasing their strong self-awareness and the city’s acceptance of such expressions. In response to this act, I deconstructed the urban landscape, freeing the sense of place and self-awareness tied to each name, and restructured them into a new form—distinct from the original—within the historic houses on Governors Island, the venue for the exhibition.
歩道に自分の名前を刻む行為の背後にある本来の願望とは何だろうという疑問から、歩道に刻まれる名前の観察が始まりました。その名前と場所は個人にとって非常に重要です。私は、時間とともに見えなくなった名前の輪郭を切り取る行為を通じて、彼らのアイデンティティを理解しようとしています。
自分の名前を刻む行為は、ニューヨークという土地に暮らす人々の特性、強い自己認識、そしてその行為を受け入れる街の特性を表しているように感じました。私は彼らの行為への静かな応答として、この都市の風景を解体し、各名前に関連する場所性と自己認識を解放し、それを元のものとは異なる新しい形として、展示会場であるガバナーズアイランドの古い住宅に再構築しました。
