Franz Kafka, “When I Came Home in the Evening”
The story begins when the protagonist returns home in the evening to find a giant egg lying in his room. He makes a contract with the bird that hatches from the egg, raising it and teaching it how to fly in order to prepare for a journey to the tropics. The contract reads: “I, the stork-like bird, promise that if you support me with fish, frogs, and insects until I am able to fly, I am obliged to carry you on my back to the southern countries.” This short tale, barely four pages in a paperback edition, seems to evoke the very conditions in which artworks come into being. In our exhibition, we likened the space of Milk East—the venue—to the “room” of the story. There, through various methods and gestures, we created our works as a way of preparing for the arrival of spring. In doing so, we sought to open the space as a site for thinking together with others, in order to grasp something of “our world.”
カフカ短編小説「夕方帰宅してみると」
物語は、主人公が夕方帰宅すると、部屋に巨大な卵が転がっているという場面から始まる。彼は卵から孵った鳥と契約を交わし、南国に旅立つため養い育て、 飛び方を教え込んだ。「僕、こうのとり風の鳥は、君が魚、蛙、虫でもって、 飛べるようになるまで僕を扶養してくれた場合には、君を僕の背に乗せて南方の国々へ運ぶ義務を負うことを約束する。」文庫本にして、わずか４ページのこの物語は、どこか作品を生み出す状況を連想させた。私たちは会場であるミルクイーストという空間を、作中でいう「部屋の中」に例え、さまざまな手技でもって作品をつくり、春を迎える準備をした。そして、「我々の世界」を捉えるための、他者と思考する場として開かれることを目指したのだった。
