Shanghai, once shaped by the colonial era, absorbed many foreign cultures, and the layers of that history continue to define the city today. Walking through its streets, one can still encounter elements that quietly reveal this past.
This work reflects on the “windows” of residential buildings within the city’s everyday scenery. Some gongyu (apartments) from the colonial period are still in use. From the outside, these clustered apartments appear opaque, yet stepping into their courtyards reveals a slower passage of time. Through the windows drift the sounds of cooking, television, and voices—traces of the lives unfolding within.
As Shanghai modernizes rapidly, the old is often demolished and replaced without hesitation. Many historic gongyu have already disappeared, leaving little trace. The modern city that emerges increasingly resembles other global metropolises.
Still, the sounds and scents I sensed from passing windows, the breeze moving between outside and inside, remain fragments of daily life that have continued from the past into the present. The window itself becomes a threshold—connecting the inner life to the outer world—revealing, in its presence, the subtle expressions of everyday existence.
上海は植民地時代に様々な海外の文化を受け入れ、そしてそれらの歴史が今の上海の街を形成してきた。上海の街を歩くとそのような歴史を感じさせる要素が街の中で多く発見することができる。 この作品では上海の日常風景の中にある住宅の「窓」について考察した。上海には今も植民地時代からそのまま使われている「公寓/アパート」がある。集合して建っているアパートは、表向きには様子はうかがえないが、一歩その敷地内に入ってみると、ゆっくりと流れる時間が存在している。窓からは料理をしている音、テレビの音、話し声が聞こえ、そこに住む人々の生活を感じる。 急速に現代化する街は、古いものを排除し、新しいものを躊躇なく出現させる。すでに多くの古い「公寓/アパート」は解体され姿を消している。 現代的に変容した大都市は、世界の他の大都市と何ら変わらない姿をしている。私が通り過ぎた窓から聞こえてきた音や匂い、外から内へ通る風は、過去から今に続く人々の日常生活の一部であり、窓は生活の内側と外側をつなぐ存在として表情を見せながら存在していた。
